HP State industrial profile

Introduction:

Himachal Pradesh is small hilly state situated in the northern part of the country. Its altitude ranges from 350 Meters to 6975 mtrs from mean sea level. The total population of the state is 60,77, 248 with the density of 109 persons per sq. km. It became a full -fledged state in January 1971. Because of the peculiar climatic conditions, the state has become an attraction for tourist through out the year.

Important Economic Activities:

Due to the poor industrial base, the economy of the state is largely dependent on agriculture and its allied activities. Bulk of the working population earns their livelihood from this activity where as industry provides livelihood to just 2 to 3% of working population.

Horticulture has developed systematically in the State. Apple production particularly in the districts Shimla, Kullu, Kinnaur and Chamba has given State a place of pride in the country. The production potential of all kinds of fruits in the state is 4.92 lakhs tones. Off-season availability of vegetable crops is helping farmers in fetching good returns. Major off-season vegetables are, Peas, cauliflower, Mushroom, Ginger, Tomato etc.

Forest also plays an important role in the economy of the State. Around 22% of the geographical area of the state is actually covered with forest. The State has vast hydel power potentials. Hydel power generation in the state has been accorded top priority from the 6th plan onwards. Out of the total identified hydel potential of about 21000 MW only 3830. 64 MW has been harnessed so far. The power generation under the control of HP Government is 301.170 MW.
